Hormone treatment

Are you considering hormone treatment and want to know about the benefits and side effects?

Hormone treatment is very much misunderstood because of misrepresentations in magazines and on television, and it is often practised by unqualified people without any specialized knowledge. Most of the time there is no real scientific evidence for using particular hormones for anti-aging - unless the patient already has a medical lack of that particular hormone. However, there is wheat amongst the chaff, and I'm going to attempt to sort through this complex subject.

The attempt to retain or regain youthful looks has been around forever, but since the late 19th century and continuing till the present is the idea that by replacing the hormones that naturally reduce with advancing age, good health and an attractive physical appearance can be retained well into old age. This idea has always been controversial ever since the days of Charles Eduoard Brown-Sequard, Eugen Steinach, and Serge Voronoff - who pioneered the idea.

Although out of fashion today, while they were busy inventing and selling their hormone therapies, they all made important discoveries in the fields of endocrinology, the biology of gender and hormone replacement therapy.

Some of the treatments are quite promising though, especially those involving estrogen - which has a beneficial effect on the skin when applied, and melatonin. Use the menu to find out which hormone treatments are actually any good for anti-aging, and which are snake oil in a pill!
