Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) in face creams.

Would you like to increase the amount of collagen in your skin, improve skin elasticity and remove lines and wrinkles? There is plenty of scientific evidence that vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) in a cream can do that - even in 3% or 5% concentrations. See the experiments below.

Vitamin C is a very popular anti-aging ingredient. The following companies make Vitamin C face creams: Kinerase, Anthony Logistics, MD Skin care, Cellex C, SkinMedica, Dr Michelle Copeland, SkinCeuticals, Exuvience, Osmotics Kinetin, Jan Marini, Babor, Rodan and Fields.

What is Ascorbic acid?

The word "ascorbic" comes from 'scorbutus' meaning scurvy, and 'a-scorbutus' means 'preventing scurvy' which is how Vitamin C was discovered. An 'acid' is any chemical compound that when dissolved in water, gives a solution with a pH of less than 7 and is capable of donating a hydrogen ion to another compound (called a base). Vitamin C helps form and maintain collagen - building block for connective tissue in skin, ligament, cartilage, capillary walls etc. Collagen helps wounds heal and maintain healthy blood vessels. More specifically, ascorbic acid converts proline and lysine to hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine which are neccessary for collagen formation.

Topical activity of ascorbic acid: from in vitro optimization to in vivo efficacy.

We have a new 'oil in water' skin cream with 3% Vitamin C (ascorbic acid). This cream shows it can keep the active ingredient stable. We think, looking at the lab studies, that it released the water-binding active ingredient better than a similar 'water in oil' formulation.

After a week of using the cream, we measured the number of ultraweak photons given off (a test to see how much oxidative stress the skin is under) and the excellent antioxidant activity of the 3% vitamin C cream was shown. The study also proved that Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) reduced oxidative stress in skin a lot better than sodium ascorbyl-2-phosphate (the verasion of Vitamin C normally used in cosmetics).

Our study on 25 human volunteers lasted a month and we saw an increase in the number of dermal papillae [finger-like projections connecting the dermis and epidermis] after the 3% ascorbic acid cream was used and a significant reduction in face wrinkles. Altogether, 3% ascorbic acid in cosmetic oil in water cream is good at releasing the active ingredient, using the cream on skin caused a reduction in free radicals, improved the structure of the skin and reduced fine lines and winkles in a relatively short period of time.

Topical ascorbic acid on photoaged skin. Clinical, topographical and ultrastructural evaluation: double-blind study vs. placebo

Vitamin C used for its antioxidant properties and its role in collagen production. Applying vitamin C also appears to protect skin from the suns rays making it a useful substance in the treament of skin ageing.

A cream with 5% vitamin C used on women with photoaged skin every day on the lower neck and arms over a six month period. We compared the Vitamin C cream with the carrier cream alone. We checked the skin at the beginning of the experiment, 3 months and 6 months.

There was a significant improvement. The skin density was improved and deep furrows were decreased. The elastic tissue was repaired. Topical application of 5% vitamin C cream is an effective and well-tolerated treatment causing skin improvement and modification.

Use a Vitamin C cream in your beauty routine if you don't already. Make sure its the 'ascorbic acid' version of Vitamin C.
