Perlane / Restylane / Hyaluronic Acid as a dermal filler!

"Since the mid ninties hyaluronic acid (Perlane, Restylane) has been used on the continent. Different companies make their HA in different ways. Q-Med AB from Uppsala in Sweden and LEA-DERM from Paris use hyaluronic acid made from fermented streptococci bacteria. Hyaluronic acid, as a substance does not differ from species to species so therefore should not cause any allergic reaction. [Actually there have been occasional reports of allergic reactions to Hyaluronic acid for reasons that remain mysterious. Some dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons now do a patch test a month before treatment]

If you want to use it to treat wrinkles, depressed scars or soft tissue loss the hyaluronic acid must be stabilized or it will disappear too quickly. Each maker uses a different process for this and that is why some hyaluronic acid products last longer than others, or are thicker and suchlike. Some hyaluronic acids are more suitable for finer lines - some for deeper wrinkles and folds. Some are used to augment lost soft tissue [plumping out lips and cheeks].

A novel way of using hyaluronic acid is to not use it for filling in lines as such, but to inject it into the superficial surface of the skin to hydrate and renew it. This must be repeated every few weeks or months."




Perlane and Restylane are well tolerated, with even less swelling and redness than collagen, which is great, but but if Aquamid is an option for you I'd suggest using it instead. Incidentally, sometimes Hylauronic Acid can last longer than intended. If you need to remove it a Hyaluronidase injection underneath the treated areas should work.
