Fat grafts
Also called called free fat transfer, autologous fat transfer / transplantation, liposculpture, lipostructure, volume restoration, micro lipoinjection and fat injection.
Fat grafts are sometimes used in place of dermal fillers such as Restylane and similar. I would generally not recommend them as you can never tell which fat will take and which not. This leaves a lumpy appearance. With Restylane or Aquamid, what you see is what you get. With Isolagen, Dermalive, Artecoll and fat transplants - its not. Its guesswork by definition.
The only exceptions to this would be for filling in under eye depressions, as ordinary dermal filler is unsuitable for these areas so there is little option, and the technique below, which sounded interesting.
Injecting fat into muscle tissues
If you are certain you want a fat graft for restoring facial volume, shop around to see if you can find out the exact technique used. Some are better than others. You want the ones where the fat is laid down in more 'passes' and where the harvested fat is processed and centrifuged very gently.
Translated from Science into Plain English by me from..
Facial Volume Restoration With the Fat Autograft Muscle Injection Technique.
Using fat grafts to fill out the hollow areas we get in our faces as we age has been a very popular technique for decades now. Many people think of fat as the ideal filler because it is entirely natural to the human body, you can't have an allergic reaction to your own fat, and (usually) there is plenty to go round!
Unfortunately there is a big problem. You cannot tell how long a fat graft will last and getting both sides to look the same has been difficult. Also, when you inject a lot of it you might see bruising for months on end.
So, we needed a new technique.
We call our new method 'fat autograft muscle injection' or 'F.A.M.I.'. This is what happened when we tried it on 100 patients.
First we extracted the fat as gently and as cleanly as possible and centrifuged it to seperate the fat cells from other substances. We injected the patients' own fat inside their facial muscles with different blunt-ended needles for different groups of muscles. Most of our patients went for a partial face proceedure using anywhere between 3 and 63 cc of fat all in one session.
There were no complications and everyone was up and about in around 7 days. The patients were pleased with the results when we asked them 3 and 6 months later.
We like the FAMI technique for facial fat grafts. It is artistic and systematic, being symmetrical and long-term.
