Does Botox really work?
Do you want to remove wrinkles and prevent them returning?
Due to demand for non surgical cosmetic proceedures, dermatologists have had to reach a new understanding of the underlying causes of facial wrinkles. This new knowledge broadened the treatment options for all kinds of cosmetic problems, but one thing remained a puzzle - the persistent reoccurrence of certain facial wrinkles time after time, even after surgery. Their origin was not entirely understood in all cases.
But there is a solution - Botox. Crows feet and frown lines respond better to Botox than any number of soft tissue fillers, skin resurfacing or surgical intervention. The results of surgery have generally been slightly disappointing on crows feet and frown lines, perhaps because the real cause of these problems has been more to do with muscle movement and facial expressions than with any 'excess' skin or soft tissue loss. Botox, in the right hands, provides the answer.
Where it is injected, it prevents the signals from nerves reaching the muscles. This stops a particular muscle contracting. Not contacting - no movement of the skin above, so no wrinkles. When the skin stops moving over a certain area all but the deepest wrinkles soon fade.
How is Botox used?
Its not simply a question of injecting the botox into a muscle and hoping for the best. There is an art to Botox treatment.
For fifteen years or so Botox has been used in the upper regions of the face - such usage is quite commonplace - along the brow, between the eyebrows, the outer corners of the eye. Recently however Botox injections in the mid to lower face as well as the neck area have become more popular.
Botox treatment can smooth lines and wrinkles between and around the eyes, remove horizontal wrinkles in the neck, soften skin creases between lower lip and chin and the downturned lines from the outer corners of the mouth. Botox can even reduce nostril flare and create facial symmetry where none existed - but caution must be used.
Injecting Botox around the mouth area is not without its potential risks. No-one wants their mouth paralysed - even if its only for a few months..!
Botox is the most popular cosmetic proceedure in the USA today. Patient satisfaction with Botox is extremely high. If you wish to avoid the pitfalls awaiting the unwary - the most important consideration when choosing your practitioner is that they have an excellent knowledge of the anatomy of every muscle in the face, its function, its likely range of movement and the whereabouts of any nerves in the vicinity.
Botox as facial sculpture
One carefully placed Botox injection, of the right amount and dilution, can be used to make very precise changes to complex muscle interractions.

For instance, if you inject this muscle (left picture, blue arrow) with Botox you put it out of action, and allow this muscle (right picture, pink arrow) to lift up the corner of the lips!

In the hands of a real artist, Botox becomes more than a wrinkle treatment and a muscle relaxant - it is a tool for sculpting a face on a par with Aquamid. Although skill is an important part of any Botox treatment, costs vary - so you have to look around for the best prices.
